Seven Devils Wayside - May 12, 2012

A dozen of us headed to the coast for a day at the beach. Seven Devils Wayside and Whiskey Run Beach are located about 10 miles north of Bandon off Seven Devils Road. After stopping just past Coquille for a pit stop, we continued on the twisted, convoluted route to Seven Devils Wayside... a lovely picnic area with picnic tables, restrooms and a paved parking lot. Whiskey Run Beach has none of those. Thankfully, all the drivers had received a map and detailed directions before we left Roseburg, so everyone managed to find their way to the wayside even though we couldn't always see the other cars.
The entire hike was on the beach... first north along Merchants beach for about 2.5 miles and then south toward Fivemile Point. The sun is shining and there is a slight breeze. Cool, but not cold. We aren't worried about being caught on the wrong side of the point by the incoming tide since low tide is +.1 at 12:15pm. The beach here is usually a flat, sand beach with some exposed rocks by the point. With such a low tide, several areas had rock flats exposed and tidepool areas that we don't normally get to see. It added interest and variety to the hike. Several of the group had never been tidepooling before and were delighted with a chance to do some. It's always fun to see what you can find... sea stars, anemones, chitons, barnacles, mussels and sponges were hidden around the exposed rocks. There was also a newborn harbor seal pup on the beach. We kept our distance and hope the mother returned for it. Several shallow creek crossings made it challenging to keep your feet dry. Seagulls and shore birds foraged along the water's edge. The hike ended up being about 7 or 8 miles total. It was such a beautiful day, we hated to leave.
