Cape Arago Perimeter Trail - November 19, 2016
Coordinator, narratative and pictures by Richard O'Neill
With all the hiking we do at Cape Arago, it was time to do something different there. The Perimeter Trail follows the eastern boundary of both Shore Acres and Cape Arago State Parks and since Rachel and I were the only club members who had hiked this mysterious trail, it was high time the club went.
9 hikers braved the weather reports but despite the dire predictions, it was a cool, blustery, but dry day. Just perfect for hiking! After finding the hard-to-find unmarked trailhead at Shore Acres, we followed the trail through a lush forest as the trail headed briskly uphill. From there, the path went up and down as it followed the zig-zag park boundaries.
After a pleasant 4 miles walking through a beautiful coastal forest, we stopped at the Cape Arago group area for lunch, rest, and relaxation. A short walk later, we were at windy Cape Arago which was now familiar turf for most of our crew.
Cape Arago is the perfect place to walk in the late afternoon, watching the waves break on the incredibly jagged shoreline. All in all, a nice hike augmented by the new-trail experience by most of the group.
