Mt Thielsen - July 30, 2016

Seven hikers met in the parking lot and left promptly to meet Bill at Glide and traveled to the Mt. Thielsen trailhead. On up the trail they met Valarie, Dave and Casey who had started out earlier in the day.
Mosquitoes were there but weren’t too bad. It was a gorgeous day for a hike, and not too hot after days of 90+ temperatures in Roseburg. The group quickly diverged, fast hikers setting a good pace as they toiled up the mountain. The Forest Service has done some more work on the trail cutting back some of the overhanging boughs in the blow-down area and leveling out some of the root ball cavities in the trail. Edwin did his usual good work, helping two newbies to the top. In all, four hikers summitted and others got higher than they had done before.
There were a lot of cars at the trailhead and it was fun talking to them as they came off the mountain. Lois gave a ride to two people from New Hampshire who had taken the Howlock Mt. trail to access Thielsen. They too, had summitted. There is a new fire at Crater Lake and smoke plumes were visible from the parking lot.
