Tahkenitch Dunes – March 1, 2025

Narration by Rheo Wheeler

We had a good turnout for our forest/beach hike with rain on the horizon. Fourteen in all with one coastal friend meeting us at the parking lot. We did this hike in reverse from the way I had always done it in the past, and saw a new and better perspective. We traveled up and through the coastal woods, being spit out on the sand with a trail somewhat following Tahkenitch creek to the ocean. Erosion has made the beach landing more of a scramble and slide, but the aid of a helpfully placed rope made the 8ish foot drop to the sands a bit easier.

Normally this then becomes a leisurely stroll down the beach to our next trail, but with an angry high tide (thankfully not quite all the way in) it was a stroll, punctuated with mad dashes for life to escape the incoming angry waves. Two of us got overtaken and got pretty wet, and one coat was lost in the mad dashing about, but all survived. Then it was back through the deflation plain and up to the Threemile lake overlook for lunch. First arrivals were treated to a bald eagle flyover, but it did not linger for photos.

After lunch it was back on a beautiful wooded trail to continue our loop back to the beginning of our adventure. It seemed like a lot of uphill hiking, but this was not a sandy trail so the going was somewhat easier. Total mileage was around 6-7 miles but we get more credit due to the uphill and soft sand. And no rain either, the weather gods were with us once again.

Tahkenitch Dunes – April 1, 2023

Some foolish hikers decided to trek through the sands of Tahkenitch Dunes this April Fool’s Day. Ok, so maybe it wasn’t so foolish, as it was a gorgeous day for a hike on the coast! This club favorite has a little bit of everything, from lush forests to sandy dunes and of course, the beach. Always a crowd pleaser, the variety of terrain keeps hikers coming back for more.

Tahkenitch Dunes Loop – April 2, 2022

A dozen or so hikers did some sand walking on this spring day on Tahkenitch Dunes. Some clouds, some sun, and a little sand in the boots made for an excellent combination of elements, which always reminds hikers they are on the Oregon coast!

Tahkenitch Dunes – March 25, 2017

Hike Coordinator – Richard O’Neill

I seem to be a lucky hike leader lately. It was raining in Roseburg and on the drive to the coast but once at the coast, the clouds dissipated and voila! It was a sunny day on the beach.

The original plan was to hike to Tahkenitch Creek and wade across to the Oregon Dunes area. But alas, Tahkenitch was rain-swollen and moving too deep and fast to wade across safely. So the plan was amended to an 8’ish mile loop through the dunes and past Threemile Lake. 10 hikers made the right turn and 3 hikers inadvertently made the left turn at the first fork. Any anxiety a hiking leader with missing hikers may have felt was assuaged when we ran into the three hikers doing our hike in reverse order, so all was well.

This has been an uncommonly wet winter and much to our surprise and chagrin, a full-fledged creek has formed about 0.5 miles from the beach. Because the soil is all sand, the creek has carved a veritable Grand Canyon of the Tahkenitch right across the trail. So, we got to practice our bushwhacking skills as we left the trail and scrambled down to Tahkenitch Creek.

We then got to practice our sprinting skills due to a very large sneaker wave. Rachel was ahead of us so I frantically pointed at the wave coming to smite her from the rear. Unclear on the concept, Rachel smiled sweetly and waved. She got wet.

We enjoyed a lazy lunch on the beach and the sun felt wonderful upon our pale Oregon skin. Everybody was game for more miles so we took the dune trail to Threemile Lake and then it was up and over the mountain and through the lush coastal woods before we returned to our cars at Tahkenitch Campground.

Almost as soon as we started home, the rain resumed. Like I said, I seem to be a lucky hike leader, lately.
